Visioning the Future of Transportation

Welcome to the website for the Greater Helena Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO) Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP).

The last LRTP was adopted in 2015. Since then, the Helena area has grown significantly. Following the 2020 Census, the population surpassed 50,000, officially designating the region as a metropolitan area and requiring the creation of an MPO.

In response, a coalition of regional partners, including the City of Helena, City of East Helena, Lewis and Clark County, and the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), formed the Greater Helena MPO.

WHY THE LRTP MATTERS

As the Helena area transitions into a large metropolitan planning region, a comprehensive long-term transportation strategy is essential.  The LRTP will:

  • Address the evolving needs and priorities of the community

  • Prepare for emerging transportation technologies and innovations

  • Align with national, state, and local initiatives.

  • Position the region to take advantage of future funding opportunities.

This plan provides a 20-year roadmap that will guide decisions on roadway, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian improvements, building a transportation system that is connected, accessible, and sustainable.

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER

The LRTP is more than just a planning document, it is a shared vision for the region's future.  By working together, the greater Helena community can create a safe, efficient, and resilient transportation system that supports growth and enhances quality of life for all users.
